Executive Board News:
If you have not heard, a new SCHS Board was formed January 28, 2008. We all feel privileged to be working with a team of dedicated professionals who are committed to making the Shelter a success. Our first few months have been extremely busy, as well as very rewarding. We will continue to update the community with information related to events that benefit the animals.  The Staff continues to do an outstanding job taking care of the day to day needs of the residents. Additional kennels have been added, and with the help of volunteers the facility looks better than ever.  For those people who are currently volunteering their time, thank you!! If you have any questions, suggestions or would like to volunteer at the shelter please call or email.

Fundraising News:
February 6 - 10 - the Tubac Festival of the Arts. This was hosted by the Tubac Chamber of Commerce. During the 5 day period 7 puppies, 3 dogs, 3 kittens and 3 cats were adopted. Between donations and adoption fees the SCHS received $3,000.00. Thank you Tubac Chamber of Commerce and all the volunteers who help make this event a big success.  Please contact the Board if you would like to help this event next year. We need you!

Feb. 23 - Rio Rico Flea Market. This event was one that the new board wanted to get involved with in order to showcase our Shelter. Although the proceeds were small (2 puppies adopted and only $271.00 brought in) we were featured on the community page of the Nogales International. Thank you Rio Rico Community!

Feb. 24 - Z Club Art Show at Hilltop Gallery. Hilltop Gallery is one of Santa Cruz County’s Gems. It is a place that works hard to feature local artists and hosts many community groups. The Z Club, a group of high school students) is sponsored by Zonta, a Professional Women’s Organization. The Z Club chose to present a portion of the proceeds of their art show to the SCS. The $905.00 check presented to us represents not only money, but the Community Support and Awareness of our young people. Thank you Z Club and Zonta!

"Panchos" in Tubac arranged the tasting to be in the newly restored 'Otero Ranch Home' at the Tubac Golf Resort. The setting was beautiful for the tasting and the supper.
Another Thank You to Panchos and Sue Rogers who opened her home and hosted delicious buffet after the tasting for the volunteers and other shelter supporters, and to Christine Priester for coordinating this event.

March 7-9 - Rancho Rossa Vineyard Wine Tasting - 1 puppy and 1 kitten adopted. $962.00
proceeds from the winery. Thank you Sarah & Chris Hamilton!

April 11 - May 17 (ongoing) - Tubac Center of the Arts “Animals and Spirits”

May 10, 11 – The BowWow Bake and Gift Sale at Esplendor Resort, Rio Rico sponsored by Barbara Thompson and Bob Rich. The sale was a great success with Barbara and her volunteers taking in $2K for the shelter. Thanks to all those bakers who contributed some yummy treats for the sale.

May 16th – The Staff opened up a “Thrift Shop” to bring in additional funds for the shelter.   The Thrift Shop has been named “Big Red’s Thrift Shop” in memory of Big Red the shelter resident dog who passed away this year.    The Staff continues to get call from throughout Santa Cruz County and Tucson from supporters who want to donate all types of items.   The shop has been a BIG success making an average of $1,500 per month.   Please contact the staff at the office and they will make arrangements to pick-up items if you have items you would like to donate.

July 18th – The Super 8 Motel in Nogales hosted the Little Brown Bear BBQ dinner to honor the memory of Sandy’s dog Little Brown Bear.   Sandy did all the cooking and the food was GREAT!    Over 200 people attended the event and enjoyed entertainment from the Hog Canyon Band (sponsored by Robin Lucky – thank you Robin!).   Thank you to all who attended and made this event a big success for the shelter.

August 10th – The Hilltop Gallery was the location for an Ice Cream Social to announce the winners of the second annual Art for Animals Sake.   Hilltop Gallery and the Shelter teamed up to have an art contest with children from the local communities submit work of animals.   Prizes were awarded to the winners thanks to donations from many of the local businesses.   We have many budding artists in the area!

August 24th – The Presido Café was the location for an Asian dinner event with all the food prepared by Lucky who is known for her wonderful dishes!!   This was another successful dinner event for the shelter with over 160 people attending.   Georgia & Richard Conroy (2 of our very own Board Members) provided wonderful entertainment.    In addition,  Sandy Parker donated a beautiful Spirit Doll and Dottie Rees donated a wonderful little decorative box from Mexico.   Both items were raffled off with the proceeds benefiting the shelter.  Thank you ladies for your donations!

September 12th & 13th – Candy Bell hosted a Christmas event at her home in Green Valley offering a wide variety of Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, cards and gift bags.  In addition, Board Members and Volunteers provided baked goods to be sold at Candy’s.   Candy donated ALL of the Christmas items and did a fantastic job of selling over the weekend.  Now we know why she makes a good Real Estate Agent!   In addition, Candy helped the shelter sell over $200.00 worth of quilt raffle tickets this year by having friends feature the quilt in local Real Estate offices.   Candy, Thanks for all your support!!

October 2nd-5th  -  The Sonoita Fairgrounds was the site of the Santa Cruz County Fair and boy did we get a great spot for our booth!   The SCHS booth was right by the main gate entrance and it gave us excellent exposure to everyone attending the Fair.   We had many visitors stop by to see our animals.   Kado the dog was a big draw for all the school children who attended the Fair on Friday.  Talk about a great dog when he was surrounded by dozens of children.   The weather was a challenge over the weekend and thanks to the folks who stopped by to talk and show their support for the animals.

Oct. 17 thru Nov. 12th – Once again the Super 8 Motel was the location of another Shelter event.   Sandy hosted the Shelter Employee Book Sale and this allowed the Staff to display the hundreds of books and video’s donated to the shelter since the staff opened the Thrift Shop.   Working with Sandy, the Board Members set-up the “book store” and for the opening weekend with Volunteers baking a ton of goodies.   With the staff selling books for 50 cents to $1.00, they made over $1,500.00!!   We think that will  tell you how many books were sold!   We still had many books and videos left.   Sandy called a friend from the Boys & Girls Club in Nogales and we are happy to report that all the remaining videos were donated to the club to benefit children throughout the community.   The remaining books will be donated to various organizations throughout the community.

November 16th – The Barrio Community in Tubac was the site of a community garage sale/flea market.   Not many neighbors set up tables, however, there were a few and many people stopped by to check out our table.  In fact a few folks stopped by to give us items to sell.  Thanks to Sharon Martin for donating holiday items which sold fast and to Tubac Technologies who donated computer accessories and which brought us additional sales.    Thank you to others who stopped by just to give us donations and show support for the shelter.

December 6th – Bow Wow Bake Sale at Esplendor Resort.   Barbara Thompson and Bob Rich hosted another one of their famous bake sales at Esplendor.   Thanks to the many volunteers and supporters who baked delicious goodies.  A special thank-you to Barbara Rumburg for managing the sale of the goodies!   Barbara is known in many circles for her baking talents and her baked goods are the first to go!   In addition, Candy Bell featured more of the Christmas items she donated.  People were snapping up the wrapping paper and gift bags getting ready for the holiday.   While many folks could not attend the sale, we are grateful to all of you who sent donations to Barbara Thompson to show your support.   This event brings in much needed funds for the shelter.  Thanks Barbara & Bob!

December 6th & 7th – Our last event for 2008!   The Tumacacori Festival provided the shelter with great exposure to the large crowds who attended the event both days.  The puppies and kittens who attended the event were a big draw at our Ramada.   While none of our animals found homes over the weekend, we did receive many donations.  The remaining baked goods from the Bow-Wow bake sale were all sold on Sunday making it a very successful weekend for the shelter at both events.

2008 was a very busy year for the Board, Staff and Volunteers as you can see.    We look forward to more fun and successful events in 2009!

How Are We Doing?

Through November 30th, 2008 we have taken in 248 cats and dogs.   Sadly due to the economy our intake numbers have increased compared to previous years.   The good news is we have adopted out 246 cats and dogs!    The shelter is currently full with wonderful cats and dogs so if you are thinking of making an addition to your family, please consider one of ours who is looking for a new family.    Staff changes:  Due to the increase in the number of animals at the shelter and the success of the thrift shop, we have changed our staffing to 4 full time and 2 part time employees.  Santa Cruz Humane Society relies on donations from the community for our overhead.  Organizations and clubs in the community often give part of their proceeds to the shelter when they have fund raisers. The members of the Board seek out grant opportunitieses. If you would like to become a member of the SCHS there is an envelope for that purpose in
this newsletter.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Santa Cruz Humane Society, the initial membership fee is $100. Reasonable annual dues to be set by the Board of Directors.  Please mail checks payable to SCHS to PO Box 4326, Tubac, AZ 85646-4326  All help is gratefully accepted. Our furry friends are grateful too.

Santa Cruz is a non-euthanasia facility (except for at-risk animals). Our mission is to care for lost and abandoned animals, spay/neuter them and encourage fostering and adoption.  Fundraiser? If your group or organization is planning a Fundraiser and or Community Event, consider donating a percentage to the Santa Cruz Humane Society. Volunteers from the  Shelter will gladly help. Contact the Shelter for more information.
